Imagine if leadership development was a global education standard for all children living in poverty.
Hope Collaborative was founded in 2013 to provide unparalleled, innovative solutions for at-risk youth living in low-income neighborhoods. We deploy a 4-year, 12-module leadership development curriculum that leading institutions have called “one of a kind.” in collaboration with child development and mental health experts at the Clay Center for Healthy Families at Massachusetts General Hospital. We have implement the program and curriculum with top youth advocacy organizations in the United States and internationally. Hope uses a unique 3-month pedagogy that includes art and storytelling, skill building, and video production for sharing knowledge across a network of cohorts. We use the creative arts to engage Hope participants in leadership development with core social, emotional, and life skills building on relevant topics such as conflict resolution, teamwork, mindfulness, relationship skills, and engaging others.
Harvard University Press research demonstrates that leadership quality and capacity is the only consistent driver of success for organizations and individuals. Orlando Patterson, a world leader at Harvard in poverty studies, suggests in his book Cultural Matrix (2015) that leadership development is a critical missing component of the solution to end cycles of poverty. Michael Chu, expert at Harvard on social innovation, reports that low-cost, scalable solutions for people living in poverty are critical components to creating communities of health.rs.

Kids, teens, they have power. It's not just adults. It's not just politicians. Kids, they have the power. They can change the world if they want to. They can change the world to a better place.

We envisioned a program where youth could develop themselves as Leaders. Leadership skills increase one's chance to get into college, gain employment and succeed.

THE HISTORY OF HOPE

Hope Collaborative began in 2013 when a group of business builders, leadership experts, and educators took a hard look at the problem of poverty. Our research found close to 1 in 10 people in Massachusetts lives below the poverty line. Government and NGOs provide access to emergency services and assist with critical needs. Yet there was still a gap in services needed. Orlando Patterson, a world leader at Harvard in poverty studies, suggests in his book Cultural Matrix (2015) that leadership development is a critical missing component of the solution to ending the cycle of chronic poverty.

Leadership skills increase one's chance to get into college, gain employment and succeed.

Colleges place an emphasis on leadership capacity in their selection process (Psychology Today, 2012). Most organizations rate leadership capacity as a critical skill for employees (Deloitte, 2017).
We envisioned a comprehensive 4-year leadership development program where youth developed skills to grow up identifying as leaders, envisioning better futures with resilience, using gained skills to become key contributors in their communities, and effecting powerful change. We pictured young emerging leaders connecting, collaborating, and belonging to a community of Hope graduates from Massachusetts, the U.S. and around the world.

Through the Hope platform, students were able to develop skills that helped them better articulate conflicts and emotions and solve problems in their everyday life. It was amazing to watch students transform into more confident people.

Hope Collaborative can help us in the real world. One of the most valuable things I learned in this program is teamwork, because when we work together, ANYTHING Is Possible.

Because I have seen first hand how effective the program is in building tomorrow’s leaders.
